 Summary

What Is Jitterbug? End of the 1920 s in Harlem, New York, the name Lindy Hop coined a new swing dance craze, which revolutionized the social dance completely. Lindy Hop developed out of the Charleston and contains therefore many 8-count elements. But also a lot of other dance styles influenced the Lindy Hop. The essence lies in the improvisation just like in jazz music. In 1934 the bandleader Cab Calloway named a style of Lindy Hop Jitterbug . After that, Jitterbug became the synonym for Lindy Hop. Already in the 40's, but especially nowadays, the term Jitterbug is used for a lot of different swing dance styles.

Marcus & Bärbl have been teaching classes and workshops in more than 15 countries all over the world. They were given the prestigious Feather Award in 1996 and 1997, and the International Dance Teacher Award in 2002. Among their many competition titles are: World Champions, three times World Vice Champions, US Open Champions and Rock n Socks Marathon Champions. They are also the organizers of the World famous Rock That Swing Festival in Munich, Germany.

It's hard not to always give Marcus and Barble five stars for their excellent DVDS. That said, this one is a bit light on HOW to dance, although they do a very good job naming the "Jitterbug*" moves they teach, showing them clearly, and then dancing each move to (slow) music. The moves taught are a "grab bag" of moves that anyone experienced in Lindy has at least seen before... Which is good, because if you don't know them this is a great place to see them, practice them, and LEARN them. It's a short video**, but that may be a good thing; not everybody has forever to study a dance... I strongly suggest that you find some faster music to practice to before you go social dancing - after you learn the steps with the slow demos given. Your partners will thank you later for your efforts!

* Basic, Circle, Swing Out/In, Charleston, Shorty George, Easy Kicks, etc.

** At just over an hour, Marcus and Barbl don't make much of an issue about this being much different from Lindy, Boogie Woogie, Swing, etc. and I can't see much difference as they teach here... If you're interested in learning any of these Swing dances, this is good place to start and progress.
